Situated between Richmond and Kingston, Ham House is one of the most outstanding Stuart houses from the early 17th century. The house was constructed for Sir Thomas Vavasour but it was William Murray who remodelled the interior of Ham in 1926 and whose taste in art and architecture was closely linked with Charles I. It was during his tenure that the Great Staircase and the sumptuous rooms on the first floor were created. Today, visitors thrill at Ham?s lavish interiors which include important collections of textiles, furniture and paintings. Ham?s beautiful gardens include the much-photographed Cherry Garden with its famous lavender parterres, a maze-like wilderness, and eight grasses plats, a south terrace border with clipped yew cones and a 17th-century Orangery.
